Companies like Microsoft, Apple and Meta play a big role in the modern world of technology. However, have you asked yourself why you’re still using their products? Today I’ll tell you why you should finally take that switch and better ditch using anything from those companies!
Microsoft, the big tech company that introduced Windows far in the past, had in 1985 released the first version of Windows: Windows 3.11.
Windows grew to huge success with Windows XP and Windows 7 getting released, but what happened since those years with Microsoft?
All I see is a lack of innovation coming to live since AI became a big thing. I’m not fully blaming the existence of AI, since AI can actually be very useful and wanted in some cases.
But we all know, that it’s not everything and people like you and I would probably prefer to stay in control of our devices. Due to the lack of innovation recently by ‘the big’ companies, I don’t feel like I’m in control anymore and feel like my devices and services are excited.
I just can’t take Windows anymore at this point. Yes, I know that the processor in my laptops suck, but it’s unfair to say to ‘throw it into the trash’ because it’s older. Those laptops can work fine under the right optimization, and that is exactly what’s missing with Windows.
‘App not responding’, apps taking forever to load and the high CPU and RAM usage driving me mad are just one of the few issues I’ve had with Windows.
The OS Switch
That’s why I decided to make the switch to Linux, and so should you if you have an unsupported Windows 10 computer waiting to be thrown into a bin by Microsoft’s behavior.
With Linux, I have zero of the issues that I have on Windows (except software support of course, but I’m a 100% supporter of the open source community striving to cross platform support and it’s very improving lately). Therefore, I don’t have any reason to go back to 100% Windows.
RAM usage is much lower, the laptops feel way more responsive and my privacy and money doesn’t constantly being tried to get out of my wallet.
The Others
I’m not only done with Windows, but also with companies like Apple.
Why ask double the money for something that’s not double as good? This drives me mad, and I don’t get why people still try to get locked into this ecosystem.
Why does the iPhone 16E cost 600 euros? It has a single camera, and there is no such thing as a ‘smart telephoto’ baked into a main camera. All it does it cropping the image that the main camera lens made.
And a lot of people I’ve heard compared an iPhone against the Samsung Galaxy A series, but there’s a better comparison: the S series against the iPhones. The A series isn’t meant toward being the best and luxurious phone out there, so why compare two phones out of a completely different target audience?
What people also tend to forget is that you don’t always need the best, but what you want is up to you. I’ve seen plenty of people using the best from the best, but actually only tend to scroll through social media or take some photos.
If you’re that user, please get a device that is suited for your usage, and not because everyone around you does the same thing.
And there’s not only Samsung, Apple and Google to look at. Remember that there are also companies like Xiaomi and OnePlus that in my opinion offer a better value for the price and are full of innovation. Only their software is a bit tricky (and can be buggy) but apart from that they’re a really good choice!
The Good
While I dislike a lot of companies for their business strategies going straight for the money, there are a few that I can really well appreciate.
Take Valve as example. Valve is the creator of the very popular Steam gaming platform for computers (I’m saying this because Steam runs much wider than only desktops!). The platform is filled with games, and I’d recommend to buy games that are in Steam too instead of the Microsoft Store to buy them on Steam.
Why? Because Valve has good business practices, and does support more platforms by creating a solution: Proton. If you’re using Windows right now and would like to switch to Linux later, then there’s no issue doing so with Steam!
Proton is a compatibility tool making Steam games made to run on Windows only, run on Linux. I support this practice, because I’m a die hard fan of Linux now.
Of course they also do this for SteamOS which is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux used for the Steam Deck, but it can also be installed on basically any other computer.
This shows me that Valve does try to make their audience bigger in a positive way. Due to this buying games on Steam would make me more relieved, knowing that there is something ‘that’ll make it work’!
So…
Make the switch from all the companies along with their proprietary software to driven companies and developers providing open source solutions that aren’t trying to melt your data into pieces. Open source has so many advantages, that I wouldn’t see a reason not to use software and services made possible by it.
Support the companies that are worth it! I try to think realistic but open, and I hope you’re also wanting to do this!
